Service for Candidates

Service for Candidates
We've spent a fair amount of time detailing in our Candidate Charter the standards of service you can expect from Career Counsel and we set out here the full range of services we offer to our lawyer candidates. Our aim is to provide the step-by-step assistance necessary to enable you to make informed decisions about your career options and, ultimately, to identify and secure your new position.

 No Commitment Discussion

Often you'll have questions before you are ready to start the recruitment process proper and, no doubt, you'll want to satisfy yourself that we're people you'll be comfortable working with. We will be delighted to have an informal, general and confidential discussion with you about the target market and your options and, if appropriate, how best to proceed. We do not need a CV at this stage although it's always helpful.

 Initial Interview

During the initial interview, we aim to find out as much about you, your background, motivations and preferences as possible. Not only does this help us to identify the positions that might be right for you, but it also enables us to provide the full and detailed candidate profile that our clients have come to expect from us.

During the interview, we'll also discuss and agree a bespoke recruitment strategy that is designed to achieve your goals in a manner that you are totally comfortable with.

We prefer to meet all our candidates in person and this is an arrangement that they too generally prefer. However, should this not be possible, for whatever reason, we can conduct a comprehensive interview by telephone.

 Psychometric Assessment & Career Guidance

We offer British Psychological Society approved ability and personality psychometric testing services to our candidates and clients, carried out by trained and qualified assessors.

By helping individuals to define their career motivations and preferences and to identify certain psychological traits and tendencies, psychometric assessment can be extremely useful in assisting lawyers to make better informed career decisions. These days, law firms are also adopting more and more sophisticated methods in order to make informed hiring decisions, and increasing numbers are employing psychometric assessment on a regular basis.

Whether you are looking to undertake a full career review - perhaps entirely independently of the recruitment process - or want to practise and prepare yourself for possible future testing, please do contact us for further information.

Psychometric assessment is voluntary and confidential.

 Market & Salary Reports

We'll make sure that you have all the information you need about the target market to make sensible and well informed career decisions.

 Presentation Advice

It is in our interest to work closely with you to ensure that you are presenting yourself in the best way possible to prospective employers, both on paper and in person. Whether you need help revising your CV, drafting a business plan or brushing up on interview technique, we have the experience to offer all the advice and guidance you might need.

 Formal Interview Training

It may have been some years since you last had a formal job interview and you might feel that you could benefit from a little practice (most of us could!). Alternatively, you may find yourself regularly missing out on new positions at the interview stage. Either way, professional interview training can make a real difference to your confidence and chances of success at interview.

Career Counsel has negotiated a great deal with Bristol based AF Consulting to deliver interview training and guidance at the discounted rate of £210 for a two hour session. What is more, if you are successful in securing a new role through Career Counsel, we will refund the full cost of your session's training.

AF Consulting is run by Antonia Fowell, a former solicitor, recruiter and head of legal recruitment at a national law firm. She is ideally placed to guide you through the recruitment interview process and make sure you make the best possible impression on any prospective employer.

Please contact us for further information.

 Pre-Interview Briefings

We will provide you with as much information as feasible about the role, the firm and the key personalities prior to any interview. By developing close relationships with our law firm clients, we aim to give you the inside track, so that you can be as well prepared as possible.

 Offer Management

A lot of the hard work may have been done by now, but in many respects this is the most crucial stage. We will provide practical and commercial advice on all aspects of offer management and will guide you through the various negotiation, resignation and notice phases.

Where you have multiple offers, we will work with you to ensure that you maintain control of the process and will liaise closely with you and our clients to ensure that all parties are kept informed as to progress.
